About Purpose Academics

Empowering young minds to see themselves in science — with joy, culture, and purpose.

At Purpose Academy, we knew something deep and essential:
Science shouldn’t feel alien — it should feel like home because it is.

Too many African American students walk into science classrooms and don’t see themselves reflected in the stories, examples, or lessons being taught. That stops here.

Purpose Academy exists to help students feel seen, celebrated, and supported in the journey of learning science — not in spite of who they are, but because of it.

We invite learners into a space where curiosity meets culture, where identity strengthens inquiry, and where science becomes a path toward confidence, contribution, and community.

Meet the Founder

Ericka Alexander has always believed that education should lift up the whole student — mind, identity, and community and bring out their own personal brilliance. After years of working with children and families as a tutor, literacy volunteer, juvenile probation officer, youth shelter worker, and foster group home caregiver, she saw too many learners disengaged from science because their stories, culture, and identity were missing from the curriculum.

During the pandemic in 2019, Mama Ericka, as she is known by her students, discovered something that changed her life: melanin is not just pigment — it plays a vital role in health and immunity, and connects biology to lived experience in powerful ways. This discovery led her into deeper study alongside brilliant young researchers who were already advancing melanin science locally and internationally.

Her work with an African-centered school’s science department deepened her understanding of African-centered education — a philosophy that sees learning as relational, communal, and purposeful, rooted in values like Ubuntu: “I am because we are.”

Driven by a commitment to see every child fully — intellectually, culturally, and spiritually — Ericka founded Purpose Academics to continue sharing melanin science and culturally relevant pedagogy with middle school students and beyond. Guided by principles of Ubuntu, her science experiences help learners think rigorously, connect deeply, and grow confidently.

In everything she does, Ericka believes that education should not just transfer facts but affirm identity and build community — empowering students to become creative problem-solvers and compassionate leaders who contribute to their families, communities, and world.

OUR TEACHING PSYCHOLOGY

We teach science with heart and intention.

Rooted in African-centered education, Purpose Academy invites students into a learning experience grounded in identity, culture, and community — not just textbooks.

At the center of our approach is Ubuntu:
👉 “I am because we are, and we are because I am.”
This powerful idea reminds us that learning is a shared journey — one where community, relationships, and mutual respect shape the way we grow.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Collaborative discovery, not rote memorization

  • Culturally relevant context for real scientific concepts

  • Meaningful discussion that honors student voices

  • Hands-on exploration that connects science to life and identity

  • Growth-oriented confidence built through encouragement + achievement

This is science education that sees learners as whole people — brimming with heritage, deep thought, power, and purpose.

Who We Are >>

Purpose Academy is more than a classroom — it’s a community

We are educators and guides committed to creating joyful, empowering, culturally anchored learning experiences. We help students discover that science isn’t something distant or foreign — it’s connected to their bodies, their stories, their history, and their futures.

Here, students:

  • Feel validated in their identity

  • Build critical thinking skills

  • Explore real scientific concepts

  • Develop confidence and leadership

  • Become contributors in their communities

We do this by integrating curiosity with culture, exploration with identity, and rigorous science with community connection.

Why We Teach This Way

The earth is not ours it is a treasure we hold in trust for future generations - Namibian proverb

This wisdom reminds us that education is not merely about knowledge for today, but about stewardship, responsibility, and care for one another, our communities, and the world we pass on to future generations.

At Purpose Academy, we choose an African-centered science education because it reflects a tradition of connectedness, stewardship, and shared humanity — not just individual achievement. This approach draws from Ubuntu“I am because we are,” a philosophy that emphasizes community, dignity, and interdependence in learning and life.

Here’s what our approach values and prioritizes:

  • Ubuntu-Centered Learning — Learning together rooted in collective growth

  • Identity + Cultural Celebration — Making science meaningful and affirming

  • Deep Personal Recognition — Every student is deeply seen and valued

  • Stewardship & Responsibility — Using knowledge to heal our communities and planet

  • Learning for Purpose — Science taught as a tool for positive change

  • Learning for Power — Empowering students to apply critical thinking in research and application.

Contrast With Other Educational Approaches

Rather than prioritizing:

  • Recitation & Rote Memorization

  • Abstract facts without context

  • Methods centered only on individual achievement

  • Acceptance of written works without question

African-centered science blends:

  • Intellectual rigor

  • Cultural meaning

  • Community responsibility

  • Purpose-driven outcomes

  • Relational and collective learning

    while embracing self-awareness

Our Vision

We envision a world where:

  • African American learners walk into science spaces with pride and presence

  • Identity and heritage aren’t side notes but central to learning

  • Students grow into confident, curious, and compassionate leaders

  • Education strengthens community — not alienates it

  • Students become innovative problem solvers for the improvement of humanity and the world.
